What Is Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is a holiday celebrated annually in honor of mothers, motherhood, and maternal bonds. It is celebrated on different dates around the world, but typically involves presenting mothers and other mother figures with flowers, cards, gifts, and other tokens of appreciation.
The modern holiday has its origins in the efforts of Anna Jarvis in the early 20th century. After her mother’s death in 1905, Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way to honor the sacrifices mothers make for their children.
After gaining financial backing from Philadelphia retailer John Wanamaker, in May 1908 she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. This church is now considered the International Mother’s Day Shrine.
By 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as a national holiday to honor mothers. Many other countries also celebrate Mother’s Day on various dates, often adopting the American date or celebrating on other significant dates related to family or motherhood.
Common Mother’s Day traditions include presenting mothers with flowers (particularly carnations), cards, candy, personal gifts, and taking them out for special meals or gatherings. It is one of the biggest holidays for consumer spending on gifts in many countries around the world.
